Self Help Tips For Improving Your Mood

Self Help Tips For Improving Your Mood
By Ismini Apostoli

Decide once and for all that your mood, your sense of balance and well-being are your responsibility. Decide that you are precious to yourself and that you are in charge of treating yourself well. BE YOUR OWN BEST FRIEND. Decide that you love and honor yourself and repeat this as often as you need during the day. Decide that every day your first and foremost concern is to help yourself feel a little better, no matter how you have woken up that morning or how you may feel at certain moments during the day. When you are in a good mood, make a list of the things that please you and make you feel good, refer to your list when you feel down and do one or more of those things. When you are in a good mood, make a list of people, activities, places, images, experiences, memories that ordinarily make you feel good, refer to your list when you feel down and focus for a few minutes on those uplifting thoughts. Even if you are at home alone, treat yourself with respect.

Do not lounge around in your pajamas, unkempt, unshaven, etc. Act as if you are expecting someone and be presentable. It will help greatly when you happen to look at yourself in the mirror. Take care of your environment. Make it as tidy and comfortable as you can. Throw away old newspapers, magazines, junk mail, put your clothes away in your closet, make your bed, make your home an inviting place for you. If you live alone, having something alive like a plant or a pet really does help you feel that you have some company, and something to go home to. Buy some plants and decorate your home, and consider getting a pet. Even a goldfish is good enough. Call a friend, or write to a friend. Invite a friend to your home, or to do something together. Have something specific in mind, like going to a movie, or out to dinner, or for drinks. REACH OUT. If no friend is available and you are feeling bored and frustrated, take yourself out to a movie, or to dinner, or for a drink. A lot of people feel self-conscious about going out alone. Remember that you are in charge of your feelings and feel proud instead that you are doing something good for yourself. DARE! Go out for a walk, or a drive. Go on, don't be lazy, don't put it off, get out of the house and you will certainly be rewarded by the improvement in your mood.

GET IN TOUCH WITH NATURE. As often as you can, visit parks, places with greenery, take short holidays or day-trips and get in touch with nature. Enjoy the sounds, the smells, the sights, awaken your senses. Attend a lecture. Go to an art gallery. Go to the theater and watch a great performance. Play your favorite music, and make sure it's your favorite uplifting music. Take a long, luxurious bubble-bath. Buy yourself a present, yes, go on, splurge, buy something you have been wanting for a long time. Read an inspiring book, read some poetry, or go out and buy some new books. Cook a gourmet dinner for yourself. Invite someone to share it. Exercise. Doing even some simple exercises at home, by focusing on and energizing your body, you will immediately feel the improvement in your mood.Use your body, awaken your body, enliven your body and your mood will lift. Do some gardening, or some serious housecleaning! Meditate. You don't have to use any complicated procedures. Just decide to take a break from the negative self-talk going on in your mind. Sit quietly, focus on your breath, tell yourself to relax, and when you do feel completely relaxed lose yourself in a beautiful, relaxing scene like a serene pool, a lush forest, a beautiful beach and stay there as long as you like. Distract yourself from the condition, topic, person, situation, event that has brought you down. Your first priority is always your balance, your peace of mind. Avoid dwelling on past hurts and grievances, avoid painting a grim and gloomy picture of the totality of your life. Focus on the present, focus on yourself now, focus only on improving your mood now. Find things to be thankful for, things to appreciate in yourself, your environment, your job, your friends, your family, your neighborhood, your city. End each day by remembering to think good, loving thoughts for yourself. Make sure you fall asleep in a sweet mood. This will ensure that you will have pleasant dreams and wake up next morning in a much better mood. Beat the blues! You can do it! And remember: BE YOUR OWN BEST FRIEND. Eye Exercises - Boost The Power of Your Optic Muscles

The eyes contain many small muscles, and there is no doubt that eye exercises can do little harm to your eyes, but can they actually be of benefit?

A New York ophthalmologist called Dr William Bates, developed a series of eye exercises to improve eyesight without resorting to lenses or surgery. Dr Bates felt that many eye problems had their root causes in stress, tension and laziness of the eye and he thought that because of these causes, the eyes could be treated without correction such as lenses, spectacles or even surgery. Dr Bates' methods were first devised at the beginning of the 20th century, but many people still practice them today.

Dr Bates' theory revolved around the notion that the muscles of the eye became fixed on a scene causing strain to the eyes. Dr Bates felt that the eyes could be re-trained to relax and improve the link between the optic nerves and the brain.

Dr Bates' theories have been largely ignored by the world of medicine. However, many people around the world have claimed remarkable improvements in short sight, long sight, astigmatism, squints and lazy eyes using these methods. Even young children are able to practice the exercises and people with normal vision may improve concentration, reading skills and co-ordination by following the routines suggested by Dr Bates.

In essence, you can expect to perform some simple exercises for about half an hour a day. These can involve some of the following:-

• 'Palming.'

To rest and relax your eyes, sit comfortably in front of a table, resting your elbows on a stack of cushions high enough to bring your palms easily to your eyes without stooping forward or looking up. Close your eyes and cover them with your cupped palms to exclude light, avoiding pressure on the sockets. Breathe slowly and evenly, relaxing and imagining deep blackness. Begin by doing this for 10 minutes, two or three times a day.

• 'Swinging.'

Relax and keep the eyes mobile. Stand up and focus on a distant point, swaying gently from side to side. Repeat 100 times daily, blinking as you sway. Blinking cleans and lubricates the eyes, which is especially important if you spend a lot of time in front of a computer.

• You may be asked to have a 'colour day.' Choose a colour and look out for it throughout the day. When you see it, be aware of the colour rather than the form. For example, if it's a red truck, experience the shade of red, not the truck.

Why not try some of these exercises yourself?

See Clearly Method

==================

The See Clearly Method is another popular series of exercises and training to help with vision correction. Similarly to the Bates' method, you are required to do 30 minutes of eye exercises a day to strengthen and enhance the flexibility of the eye's muscles. This would usually involve making the eye change it's focus from near to far for example. One simple way of doing this would be to hold a small object in your hand and slowly move it away from your face, ensuring that your eye follows the object and retains focus upon it.

One exercise which is know as "tromboning" has you hold a small object again, starting at arm's length. Then you need to breath in and move the object slowly closer to your face, until it touches your nose. You are then required to breath out, looking at the object as you again move it away from your face. Hence the notion of "Tromboning".

The See Clearly Method also employs a number of techniques which are aimed at accelerating progress or improvement. For example, there is a technique referred to as the "blur reading" technique, which asks you to turn a magazine upside-down at a distance where the words are not distinct. Then, you are supposed to choose one word and focus your attention around it, to see if you can identify any of the letters.

As with the Bates' Method, the eye exercises suggested in the See Clearly Method are certainly worthy of a go to see if they help you at all.

Glutathione - Your Brain's Master Antioxidant Defense

Glutathione - Your Brain's Master Antioxidant Defense
By Priya Shah

Free radicals and oxyradicals play an important role in the development and progression of many brain disorders such as brain injury, neurodegenerative disease, schizophrenia and Down syndrome.

Glutathione is the brain's master antioxidant and plays an important protective role in the brain.

According to Dr. Jimmy Gutman, "The brain is particularly susceptible to free radical attack because it generates more oxidative by-products per gram of tissue than any other organ."

Many neurological and psychiatric disease processes are characterized by... abnormalities in glutathione metabolism and antioxidant defenses."

Generation of reactive oxygen species (free radicals) and oxidative damage are an important cause of neuron (brain cell) death from brain injury.

Chemicals that cause toxicity to certain brain cells are known to decrease cerebral glutathione (GSH), making the cells more vulnerable to reactive oxygen species (ROS). (1)

On the other hand, over-expression of the glutathione peroxidase (GPX) enzyme potently decreases cell death from brain injury. (2)

Brain Injury and Glutathione - The Gender Difference

Researchers at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh have found that males and females respond differently to brain injury. (3)

In animal models, levels of glutathione remain constant in females who have suffered a brain injury, but drop by as much as 80 percent in males with the same injury.

When glutathione levels drop, brain cells die much more quickly. This suggests that boys with brain injuries may require different life-saving treatments than girls.

N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), a precursor of glutathione, already approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat people who have overdosed on acetaminophen, may be an effective treatment for brain injury in boys whose brains are deprived of oxygen.

Brain Disorders and Glutathione - A Genetic Cause?

Genetics researchers have found that the glutathione S-transferase gene controls the onset of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease and determines, not if we get these diseases, but when. (4)

The glutathione S-transferase gene has previously been linked to the risk for Parkinson's disease among people who used pesticides.

A previous article covered the importance of glutathione in Parkinson's Disease.

Alzheimer's Disease and Glutathione

Free radicals and oxidative damage in neurons is known to be a primary cause of degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease.

Amyloid-ß peptide (Aß) accumulation in senile plaques, a pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD), has been implicated in neuronal degeneration.

Amyloid plaques encroaching on the brain increase the production of free radicals, or oxidative stress. Antioxidants, such as vitamin C and E "mop up" the damaging free radicals.

Glutathione (GSH) precursors can prevent death of brain cells induced by amyloid plaques in Alzhiemer's disease, while substances that deplete GSH increase cell death. (5)

Evidence has been piling up over the link between the amount of an amino acid called homocysteine in the blood and the chance of developing Alzheimer's.

For people not genetically predisposed to developing Alzheimer's, cholesterol and homocysteine, largely caused by an unhealthy lifestyle, are the core causal factors.

Welsh GP, Andrew McCaddon, showed that the more homocysteine that patients with Alzheimer's had, the worse their mental performance, and the worse their "cognitive impairment," the less they had of the antioxidant glutathione. (6)

Glutathione and Mood Disorders

Studies have found that the mood stabilizing drug, valproate, used to treat epilepsy and bi-polar disorder, regulates expression of the genes that make glutathione-S-transferase (GST).

In addition, chronic treatment with lithium, another commonly prescribed mood stabilizer used in treating manic-depression, also increased levels of GST.

These findings led researchers to conclude that glutathione S-transferase may be a novel target for mood stabilizing drugs. (7)

Alcohol Consumption and Glutathione

Alcohol abuse is known to impair memory and other brain functions and increase brain cell death. A new study in rats has shown that alchol consumption causes fewer new brain cells to form and results in greater cell death. (8)

But rats that were fed alcohol along with Ebselen - a glutathione peroxidase mimic that acts as a free radical scavenger - showed no similar reduction in brain-cell formation and no increase in cell death.

Substances that Boost Glutathione Levels and Protect Brain Cells

Taking glutathione itself as a supplement does not boost cellular glutathione levels, since it breaks down in the digestive tract before it reaches the cells.

However, intravenous glutathione therapy and glutathione precursors or dietary supplements are effective in boosting intracellular levels of glutathione.

Intravenous Glutathione Injections: Intravenous glutathione injections have been shown to produce amazing and rapid results, in patients with Parkinson's disease. Following even a single dosage of intravenous glutathione, many of the symptoms of Parkinson's disease rapidly improve, often in as little as 15 minutes.

Glutathione Precursors: In the Alzheimer's study conducted by Welsh GP, Andrew McCaddon, adding the glutathione precursor, N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) to a protocol that lowered homocysteine levels by simple supplementation with B12 and folate, resulted in prompt, striking, and sustained clinical improvement in nearly all the patients. (9)

Cucurmin (turmeric):Studies have shown that the Indian curry spice, cucurmin, has neuroprotective effects because of its ability to induce the enzyme, hemeoxygenase-1 (HO-1), which protects neurons exposed to oxidant stress. Treatment of brain cells called astrocytes, with curcumin, increases expression of HO-1 protein as well as glutathione S-transferase. (10)

Ebselen: Ebselen is a glutathione peroxidase mimic and potent synthetic antioxidant that acts as a neuroprotective agent and an inhibitor of free-radical induced apoptosis (cell death). It can protect brain cells from the neuro-toxic effects of alcohol consumption. (8)

Undenatured Whey Protein: Undenatured whey protein provides glutathione precursors, has been shown to raise intracellular glutathione levels in clinical trials, and has anecdotally been reported to improve the symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

3/07/2009

It promises to help you think FASTER and SHARPER.

It says it can grant you LIMITLESS ENERGY, help you to think like a GENIUS, and enable you to RELEASE all stresses and tension.

I'm talking, naturally, about the latest self-development tool to hit the shelves.

It's called the Brain Evolution System - a six-level meditation program that uses special sounds to help influence brainwaves.

Now, in the self-development world, everybody knows that meditation is GOOD.

It can bring a million untold benefits. And yet how many of us truly have time to quieten our minds for hours on end each day?

Well, that's where the Brain Evolution System comes in.

The Brain Evolution System - or BrainEv, for short - uses something known as "brainwave entrainment" to help skip years of unnecessary meditation.

It uses specially manipulated sounds to help influence brainwaves, putting the mind into a deep state of meditation within minutes of listening - removing the need for countless hours of mind-quietening, Zen-monk-like practice.

But we've heard all of this before - with ineffective programs such as Holosync and Hemi-Sync.

What sets BrainEv apart from it's competitors, claim the developers, is it's patent-pending 3 Point Dynamic Entrainment Audio Process. This means BrainEv uses three different entrainment methods at the same time - stopping the brain getting too accustomed to one particular pattern, and more closely-matching how brainwaves really work.

Sounds impressive... But does the Brain Evolution System really live up to its claims?

Well, to put it to the test - I decided to try it myself for two whole months!

To begin, I ordered the entire package from the official website at http://www.gobrainev.com/?a=justvis

Now, before even using the program, I was impressed at the integrity of the company. I was immediately given a free 21-day trial of level one, with an option to cancel before I was billed a single cent.

So, I tried it out.

The first level can only be described as a true soundscape. With it's natural, "distant" etheric feel, you could tell a million things were going on in the background - yet couldn't help but just relax and let them float by.

Now, I've listened to a lot of relaxation music - so I'm used to trickling waterfalls and singing bowls. But this audio was genuinely POWERFUL. You could feel it working, influencing your brainwaves, and helping you to relax further.

It's recommended you listen to each 30-minute level once per day, six days a week, for a whole month. Then you move onto the next level - finishing all six levels within six months.

Well, after my first listening session, I instantly felt more relaxed. My head was less "foggy" - and I enjoyed a focus and clarity I'd not experienced in quite some time. It's hard to explain, however I had a smile on my face - and didn't really know why!

I continued throughout the first month - and saw a truly noticeable difference in my behavior. I became more and more relaxed and calm. My brain seemed to operate faster, and I became more quick-witted. My confidence continued to improve, without any real effort.

Then, near the end of the first month, the full CD package landed at my door.

This was a professionally-packaged six-CD set, with a user guide, and a free two month supply of the mind-sharpening Acuity supplement - specially designed to help "fuel" the mind when using BrainEv.

During the second month, I worked with level two. And I can honestly say that - again - I began noticing real differences.

Now, I'm not a person that enjoys writing positive reviews. It's much easier to slander than praise. But once again, the Brain Evolution System made a very definite, positive impact.

Colleagues commented on my permanent state of happiness. I felt much more relaxed, even during the most stressed-out periods of my day. My thinking speed DEFINITELY increased - and the tablets helped boost my focus even further. Creative spurts increased. My reading speed rocketed. I found myself coming up with more elegant solutions to problems. I also found myself soaking up information more rapidly than before.

And another thing: I began waking up after just five hours of sleep. This simple meditation program was reducing my usual EIGHT HOURS down to just five - thanks to 30 minutes of listening, six times a week.

So, does the Brain Evolution System work?

During my two-month trial, it genuinely delivered an impressive set of results - all exactly as promised.

It helped SHARPEN my mind, REDUCE my stress levels, and INCREASE my energy.

Yes, I've tried meditation programs and brainwave CDs before, but never with the powerful results that the Brain Evolution System provided.

The developers claim that's down to the fact that it utilizes a "3 Point Dynamic Entrainment Audio Process" to influence brainwaves. They provide a series of fancy graphics and video features to explain it all in greater detail. They even provide online support videos for each progressive level.

I'm not entirely sure what all of that really means.

But what I do know is that the Brain Evolution System helped clear the foggy mind of a usually critical reviewer.

And - at least for me - that's worth the price-tag a hundred times over.

(Oh, and yes - you can be sure I'll continue using this package right through to level six!)

BrainEv Pros: Powerful results, professional package, round-the-clock support.

BrainEv Cons: Still requires 30 minutes of your time, 6 days a week.

Verdict: BUY IT, without hesitation!

Caring For Your Body As You Age and Anti-Aging Exercise

When you want to make sure that the body you have lasts you your whole life, there are lots of things that you need to think about. When you want to make sure that you don't need to worry about your body giving out on you, check out some of the things that you can do to prevent it from doing so.

The first step that you should take is that you should always be as active as you can. No matter how old you are, there is always something that you can be doing. Get as much exercise is appropriate for your body and always make sure that you eat right. This alone can go a long way towards keeping you healthy.

This is not to say, however, that staying active is easy! After all, we all know what those lazy days are like, where we want to do nothing at all. We'd love to sit in front of the game, or play on the computer into the wee hours. Maybe we just want to people watch or stare out the windows. Some of us feel that having retired, we don't need to do anything and that we deserve to take some time out and relax.

While that is all fair, remember that one of the most important parts of a healthy retirement is going to be staying active. Even as you grow older, you'll find that staying active just gets more and more important. Consult with your doctor and figure out what is going to be good exercise for you. Your doctor is going to be the one who can tell you what exercise are going to be good for you and he or she might be able to point out some avenues that might have escaped you. Finding the right exercise that really works for you and that really pleases you can be something of a chore, so get all the resources you can.

It doesn't matter what is happening in your life, staying active is going to be key. So what if you can't ride a bike the way that you could have when you were a kid, or so what that you can't lift weights or play other sports. There is more to being active than that, and even if you are only walking a little bit every day, it is far better for you than doing nothing and it puts you far ahead of a lot of the people out there. Remember that every little bit helps, even if you are just walking around the building or walking in circles at the mall. This can be instrumental when it comes to keeping you healthy.

Life is a funny thing, and you never know what kind of turns it is going to take. Remember that you should take every opportunity to be active and to enjoy your life that you can. Limited mobility or being in a wheelchair does not need to stop you; there are going to be options that let you get your heart rate up and help you feel better about what is going on and how your body is doing.

When it comes to lifelong body care, don't forget the basics, like staying clean and taking care of your body in general. Clean yourself with soap that moisturizes your skin and make sure that you dry yourself off thoroughly. Regular bathing will keep you ready to go out and will help you get motivated when it comes to enjoying the rest of your day. Apply lotions or creams that will keep your skin looking and feeling soft. Wash your hand often and remember that most germs are spread through touch. Washing your hands on a regular basis will keep them looking good, and it will keep you healthier in the long run. You'll find that this can play an important part in keeping you health.

When you are on the hunt for money or happiness, health can often fall by the wayside. Everyone has an excuse for why they are not taking care of their bodies, but is important to let them go and to take responsibility. This is something that everyone needs to do, and no one is going to do it for you. Maximize the good choices or your body, and remember that you only get one. You are going to be stuck with it for the duration of your life, so make sure that you put a high priority on taking care of it, no matter what.

Stay positive. It is going to be easy to feel yourself getting let down as you get older and older, but stay positive whenever possible. You'll find that positive thinking can also go a long way towards keeping you healthy. Don't get any sicker or weaker than you have to; a strong body and healthy mind can keep you go a long time!
