Addictions And The Change Process
In order to give up an addiction such as smoking, drinking or using drugs, a person has to go through expected stages of change. Since Prochaska and DiClemente’s hallmark research in 1982, these stages have been extensively scientifically validated. Rarely is a person able to give up their addiction successfully after only passing through these stages once. Generally there are a number of attempts at change before giving up for good. For example, someone might cease smoking several times over, only to resume smoking again five years later during a divorce, then have to give up smoking all over again.
It is helpful to be able to identify a person’s precise stage of change because targeted strategies can successfully assist change. Inaccurate identification of a person’s stage of change can cause rehabilitation to be unsuccessful – for example, the person may become resistant to change and may become more determined to maintain the feel-good behaviour if they feel pressure to cease their addiction. The six stages of change and a few examples of specific strategies to give up an addiction are listed below:
Precontemplation
Denial and avoidance of damaging results of the addiction are characteristics of the precontemplation stage. Only the positive aspects of the behaviour exist and there is no aspiration to change. People generally dispute the harmful effects of their behaviour by saying something like “Gran smoked 30 cigarettes a day and she lived to be 95!”.
A wake-up call is the most powerful influence to change, such as an alcoholic confronted with his mate’s drink-driving crash. An appointment with their GP for a health check can act as a stimulus for change. It is helpful to talk about the factual evidence in regards to the health, relationship or vocational consequences of the person’s behaviour (i.e., liver, lover, livelihood). It is useful to ask “What would have to take place to show you that this behaviour is having a damaging effect on your life?”. Try not to give any opinions or be pushy; rather have the person tell you the reasons why they should quit. Consider the saying “I learn what I believe as I hear myself speak”.
Contemplation
This stage is marked by ambivalence, procrastination and fence-sitting as the person begins to challenge their current beliefs. People evaluate the benefits of change versus the harmful effects of their addiction. Generally at this stage the person will view the costs of behavioural change as being substantial. It is probable that change in behaviour will take place within six months.
Encourage people in the contemplation stage to weigh up the positive and negative effects of their behaviour. Commend all desires and attempts to give up their addiction. Perceived confrontation can bring about resistance and relapse, so it is imperative that you remain non-judgemental.
Preparation
During this stage the person’s motivation to alter their behaviour increases considerably, and the likelihood of change occuring within the next month is high. The person recognises that the benefits of change outweigh the costs, sets about forming a plan to quit, and begins to put this plan into action.
During the preparation stage, it is vital that you remain tolerant, positive and encouraging. It is beneficial to obtain information on a range of treatment programs and discuss the options available with the person concerned. Offer to get in touch with program, e.g., AA groups are a good option for people with an alcohol addiction who can only manage “one day at a time”.
Action
Throughout this stage change is viewed as being beneficial with very few costs, and hard work is certainly in progress. Specific changes in thought patterns and mood are noticeable.
It is important to assist the person to get to therapy sessions and reflect on these sessions – you can help by organising transport to therapy sessions, being open to talk about the therapy process and positively reinforcing efforts to change their behaviour. Encourage family and friends to attend therapy sessions, gather information or record progress made.
Maintenance
Throughout the maintenance stage, the person becomes increasingly more confident that change can be sustained. During this stage the temptation to slip back into old behaviours is less frequent, and this period can last between six months and five years.
It is important to keep reinforcing behavioural changes as the person becomes accustomed to, consolidates and internalises the new behaviours. It is very beneficial to give help and encouragement to the person’s family and friends in order to assist in maintaining change.
Termination
Termination is the final stage of change; it indicates a full recovery where the addiction has permanently gone, without any temptation to relapse – ever. It is probable that it will take several years to reach this stage!

The 4 Elements Of Great Brain Function
Long gone are the days when neuroscientists thought the brain is permanent and constant. It is completely possible to boost your memory so as long as it is in an contect where it can do so.
In this article, I’ll show you the 4 determinants of cognitive health and how you can exploit this knowledge to access the brain’s ability to reinvigorate.
Tend not to strain considering of where to begin! Actually pressure is often a very critical factor which could have significant effects each physically and mentally. Anxiety causes the excretion of certain chemical compounds, cortisol and andrenaline.
Cortisol animates the brain cells… to death. The neurons you possess, the weaker your brain will perform. The more stress you are tolerating, the more cortisol are in your bloodstream, the more neurons wane.
Foundation number 2 is nutrition. Nutrition transforms all components of your body but more so for the neurons than any other because your brain is most enormous user of energy in your body.
Fortunately for us, foods that’re favorable for the brain are also favorable for our holistic health. By devouring food propertied with anti-oxidants, you are able to prevent oxidation from ravaging your neurons.
Foundation 3 is brain exercises. “Use it or lose it” is a fundamental postulation behind brain plasticity. By evading continual learning, you are virtually turning off your learning aptitude. By not continuously pushing your brain with memory problems and other types of stimulation, you’re virtually cultivating the declining process.
Learn a novel craft, harp, diving or even a new language keeps your brain aroused.
is effective and changes your life.]
This Is Most Likely The Most Entertaining Technique To Enhance Your Mind
Music has long been accepted to affect our psyche. It is been employed in wars to encourage bravery. It had been used in parties to uplift your mood. It is being used in meditation to calm you down.
However modern doctors are now investigating deeper questions: Can music affect your brain… physically? Can it not only change our psyche, but also alter our brain’s competency? Could it be just as effective as memory exercises and neurological training course? Current researches found the answer is most likely yes, although why it’s so, it remains a mystery.
A research at the Standford university attempting to research this hypothesis discovered that music assists us concentrate greater. It also pointed out the idea that popular music can easily predict intelligence. Assisting this last thought, a investigation analyzing children’s IQ shocked with its benefits. The children who were listening to popular music whilst answering the problems had superior outcomes than the ones who had been not listening.
Music is also well-known to minimize mental pressure. mental pressure, as you seemingly already know, occurs with lots of adverse outcomes. One of the reason this is so is because when you are tensed up, your brain sends a signal to unleash cortisol. While cortisol is handy in life and death situations because it forces you more alert in the short term, its side effects include brain cell death (it stimulates them a bit too much).
Thinking from evolutionary point of view, it’s evident that cortisol is vital to our survival. Confronted by a predator right on your house, you wish to ready for fight or flight. Cortisol permits you to do this. However with today’s restless style of living, cortisol, just like numerous of the body’s natural system, has been corrupted – it’s working constantly.
Other outcomes of music on the brain include a regular sense of joy, a raised sense of energy and even increased potential to learn. Surely, there must be abundant reasons for you to listen to music on a regular basis.
Here is the warning}: The music employed on these studies are brilliant… or in other words, classical symphonies. As a Led Zeppelin admirers, I am researches uncovered loud music like rock and roll, had the opposite outcome.
Loud music is correlated with diminished concentration span, impotent to learn and memorize. As to the cause, no one have any ideas. This is why these researches could only correlate but not ever able to verify causation.
However after quitting rock and roll for a few months, I’ve detected significant improvement in my mental capability. I was able to concentrate better, also I noticed a marked memory improvement (my spouse realized it first). To check my skepticism, I received an IQ test that showed my IQ has increased 10 points from where I was. Could listening to classical symphonies also assist your brain grow? You will never know till you try.
How Cognitive Traininga Invigorates Your Cognitive Health
It has long been presumed that the brain is permanent and consistent. Decaying memory, in the course of time dementia and the inability to process auditory signals are only a few of “unpreventable” consequences of growing old. It was not until 1998 did modern neurology discovered “brain plasticity”.
Consider the case of Michelle Mack, the girl was born with half a brain. Ordinary neurology will have concluded she’ll struggle to live. Nevertheless Michelle is living a relatively average life. She is so normal, actually, her doctor did not realize anything wrong with her. It was not till she unable to learn how to walk and speak after a specific age that her mum brought her to the hospital for a brain scan.
These two capabilities are controlled by the correct region inside human brain, which Michelle is lacking. Despite that she had trouble inside beginning, she was able to change and discover those capabilities. How did she handle to do so? The left location of the human brain has taken over these features also.
Subsequent to the “legitimate” discovery of brain plasticity (pioneers had started to learn brain plasticity beyond 50 years ago yet it was not till relatively recently that it is accepted), numerous researches had been done regarding what would transform the brain.
Conclusions from these researches revealed that there’re mostly 4 pillars to a healthy brain. 1. Daily intake of food 2. Brain exercises 3. Physical Exercises 4. Stress management. Needless to mention, how each of these pillars affects the brain is extremely complicated so I will not dig into all of them here in this article. The one with the greatest effect on brain plasticity, I think, is brain exercises. To explain why} brain exercises is so essential to a healthy brain, you must understand the key concept of brain plasticity: “Use it or lose it”.
As your brain is plastic, you could lose a skill provided that you do not use it… and I don’t mean skills such as dancing. I mean abilities as easy as maintaining your balance when you’re standing!
Researches have discovered that only by walking for 30 minutes everyday could prevent you from frequent falling over in advancing age. As expected, the working atmosphere today doesn’t help – many of us sit for the whole day
A recent research found that 60% of all American university graduates never ever again read a book since they finished school. Is it any wonder why many of us would lose our capability to learn?
“Old dogs can’t learn new tricks” is a myth! Reality is, a few of the most successful people didn’t accomplish advancement until they are older. Ray Kroc (founder, McDonald’s), Colonel Sanders (Founder, KFC) and Benjamin Franklin (Inventor, bi-focal lenses) instantly came to mind.
There is often a belief that the older we get the wiser we grow to be. It truly is true that many well-known individuals have grow to be outstanding as they grew older. They’re the ideal example when it arrives to individuals that have continually educated their mind and wouldn’t settle with what they already knew.
Can your brain’s muscles use a little stretching}?

In fact, A lot of people urge that genetics play a main role in deciding your brain function and that no any other factor have any effect.
Psychological tests have proven that you will discover plenty of points that we can certainly do for our brain to develop and to ensure that its functions enhance. That you are able now to improves your memory, strengthen your concentration, and enhance your analysis abilities and quite possibly additional. Do not picture a thing complicated guiding each one of these, you can basically recognize every thing by natural means.
One of the most effective methods that doctors have discovered that achieve these things is simply exercise. Cardio exercise, not neuro workout, to be precise.
A short fifteen minutes jog or a half an hour walk everyday could do wonders for your brain. It counteract aging, prevents immobility and increase blood flow to your brain. That’s in addition to the numerous of advantages to your body in general. So significant the effects of exercise are to our body, few doctors theorized that humans, indeed, evolved to run.
In addition to increasing blood flow, exercising also stimulate the release of some beneficial hormones. These hormones coordinate everything from feelings of disappointment to ecstasy. Naturally, it suppresses unhealthy hormones like cortisol, which may kill neurons.

A Health Instructor In The Best Known Parochial High School In The Region Encourages Her Pupils To Learn About Alcoholism Signs And How To Bolster One’s Positive Attitude, Self Esteem, And Personal Success And Happiness
Miss Benning was a health instructor at the best known parochial high school in the region. Although she had been teaching for only two years, she had already secured a reputation as a person with educational approaches that encouraged and motivated her pupils to think and to learn.
For example, one Monday morning at 11:30 she addressed the students in her classroom and articulated the following: “For the next two or three days we are going to learn about some basic alcoholism facts from a more wide-ranging standpoint and we are also going to learn about several of the most highly researched signs of alcoholism from a less general and more specific point of view.”
“Not all of these alcoholism signs will positively confirm that an individual with a drinking problem is a person who is alcohol dependent, but the more signs that a person displays, the greater the probability that he or she is a person who is alcohol dependent.”
Miss Benning then told the the pupils that each pupil would be accountable for examining two alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her results to the rest of the class via a nine minute oral presentation.
The Pupils are Keyed Up About Giving A Comprehensive Presentation to Their Fellow Students About The Signs of Alcoholism
After learning about the different signs of alcohol addiction for several days, the time had come for the individual presentations. It was instantaneously apparent that the pupils were energized about the subject matter because the information that they presented was exceptional. To say that Miss Benning was pleasantly surprised with the enthusiasm displayed by the pupils in her classroom concerning this topic was an understatement.
The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Benning passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcohol addiction signs that were presented and discussed in the presentations and in class. Miss Benning then asked the pupils in her classroom to go over the list and rank the top eight alcohol dependency signs that were most indicative of alcohol addiction. After about twenty minutes, Miss Benning collected the pieces of paper and told the pupils in her class that after she examines the results, she will reveal her findings the next school day.
There was some real excitement by the students while they were exiting Miss Benning’s class. One could swear that her pupils couldn’t wait for the next day to come so that they could find out the results of their in-class research.
The Pupils Contrast Their Results With the Findings From A Team of Alcoholism Professionals
When the next school day finally arrived, Miss Benning passed out a sheet of paper that listed the top five alcohol dependency signs as per the pupils’ rankings. To the left of these results, she included another column that was labeled “experts’ response.” She then informed the pupils in her class that the numbers in the additional column she added signified the responses that were articulated by a team of alcoholism experts.
Miss Benning told the pupils in her class to go over the information on the sheet of paper she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, issues, or questions. Within 40 or 50 seconds, almost every pupil in the class raised her or his hand. It was noticeable that the students had some questions, issues, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the experts. For example, almost every individual in the class had an issue with the highest ranked answer given by the authorities, that is, “Do you feel exceptionally sick when you refrain from drinking?”
The Essential Difference Between Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse is the Physical Dependency That is Experienced With Alcoholism and Not With Alcohol Abuse
Miss Benning then informed her students why this answer was the most straightforward indicator of alcohol dependency. She highlighted the fact that the principal difference between alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol addiction and not with alcohol abuse.
Basically this means that when an alcohol addicted individual suddenly quits drinking, he or she will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
Miss Benning then informed the students in her class that alcohol withdrawal symptoms are responses by the brain and by the body to the deficiency of alcohol to which they had become acclimated. Stated differently, alcohol withdrawal symptoms are signals from the brain and from the body telling an alcohol addicted individual that something is exceedingly out of kilter and needs to be fixed. These signals consist of a number of painful, uncomfortable, and dangerous withdrawal symptoms that can potentially lead to a loss of life if the appropriate treatment is not immediately undertaken.
Miss Benning then listed the multitude of alcohol withdrawal symptoms that can be experienced when an alcohol addicted person abruptly quits drinking.
The fact that Miss Benning tried to underline was this: an individual who engages in alcohol abuse can experience almost any and every one of the alcohol addiction signs that the students had ranked, but the one sign or symptom that few, if any, alcohol abusers ever experience is alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
To state this as precisely as possible, Miss Benning emphasized the point that alcohol abusers, unlike people who are addicted to alcohol, are not alcohol dependent and accordingly, when they stop drinking, they almost never go through alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
The Students Feel They Have Found An Inconsistency With the Findings From The Group of Alcohol Dependency Experts
The students also had an issue with the second ranked answer given by the substance abuse authorities, that is, “Have you ever had a drink the first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover?”
Miss Benning told the pupils in her class that this sign does not automatically indicate that the problem is alcoholism, but that it does underscore the need that alcohol addicted individuals have to drink in order to avoid alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
After Miss Benning explained the relevance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the alcohol addicted person, the pupils started to understand the main difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.
To add a sense of closure to the subject, Miss Benning asked the pupils in her classroom to take out a piece of paper and answer the following question: “if every person who is an alcoholic knew about every one of the alcohol addiction signs and alcohol withdrawal symptoms we have studied, what percentage of them do you think would get alcoholism rehab?”
After approximately four or five minutes, Miss Benning asked for the pupils’ responses. While many students reasoned that roughly 75 to 85 percent of individuals who are alcohol dependent would seek alcohol addiction rehabilitation if they knew about the facts related to alcoholism signs and alcohol withdrawal symptoms, most of the students reasoned that this number would not be less than 65 percent.
The Pupils Were Astonished to Find Out That Only 25% of Alcohol Dependent Individuals in the United States Ask For Alcohol Rehabilitation
To the amazement of most of the students, Miss Benning declared that according to various scientific examinations, only 25% of the alcohol addicted individuals in the United States obtain alcohol dependency rehabilitation. This shocked most of the pupils because they figured that exposure to the alarming statistics and facts correlated with alcohol addiction would motivate most of the individuals who are alcohol dependent to ask for alcohol addiction rehab.
Miss Benning then stated that people who are alcohol dependent not only need alcohol on a daily basis in order to function but they also require alcohol on a daily basis so they can stay away from possible alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Evidently, the alcohol addicted individual’s need to drink on a daily basis is stronger than facts or logic. Without a doubt, because the craving for alcohol is “reality” to the alcohol dependent person, this is a thorny issue that is difficult to change.
The Combination of Mental Health Issues and Alcohol Dependency Frequently Results in Marital, Divorce, Relationship, and Friendship Problems
Lastly, Miss Benning told the pupils in her class that it is relevant to understand that alcohol addiction and various mental health issues such as depression are highly correlated. What is more, the occurrence of mental health issues and alcohol addiction regularly result in marital, friendship, divorce, and relationship problems.
The Students are Motivated to Learn About Alcohol Dependency Symptoms and Signs in Today’s Society
A few minutes later the bell rang, signaling the end of class. Based on the excitement exhibited by the students when they were leaving the room, Miss Benning knew that she had motivated and stimulated the pupils in her classroom to stop and think about a significant health and social problem that exists in our culture. It was clear to see that her pupils also learned how to fortify their self esteem, personal happiness and success, and positive attitude.
